In short

To create an enhanced ebook, build an EPUB 3 file (the open ebook standard, based on HTML5) and embed audio or video with standard HTML5 tags, using a tool such as Apple Pages, Adobe InDesign or the free Sigil editor. Keep media small and in widely supported formats, validate the file with EPUBCheck, and test it on every store you plan to sell through, because Kindle does not play embedded media and Google Play Books does not run scripts.

  • EPUB 3 handles audio, video and synchronized read-along narration natively
  • Apple Books has the broadest support; Google Play Books plays media but blocks JavaScript; Kindle plays neither
  • MP3 or AAC audio and H.264 MP4 video are the safest formats
  • Publish a plain edition next to the enhanced one, and consider an app only when ebook limits block your idea

An enhanced ebook is a book that does something paper cannot: it plays the author reading the first chapter, shows a short video of the place where the story is set, or highlights each sentence while a narrator reads it aloud. For science fiction writers the temptation is obvious. Invented worlds come with invented names, maps, ship schematics and soundscapes, and the reader's device can already play all of them.

The catch is that the ebook ecosystem supports these features unevenly, and a beautiful file that only works in one reading app is a lot of effort for a small audience. This guide walks through what EPUB 3 can do, which stores accept it, how to prepare media and build the file step by step, and how to tell when an idea has outgrown the ebook format. At that point, some authors stop fighting reading-app limits and hire a Flutter development team to ship the same experience as one app for both iPhone and Android.

If you have not yet decided where your ebook will be sold, our step-by-step guides to publishing on Apple Books and publishing on Google Play Books cover accounts, pricing and upload rules for the two stores that handle enhanced editions best.

What is an enhanced ebook?

An enhanced ebook is an ebook that includes media or interactive elements in addition to text and images. Most enhanced ebooks today are EPUB 3 files. EPUB is the open standard maintained by the W3C (the current version, EPUB 3.3, is published as a W3C Recommendation), and because version 3 is built on HTML5, an ebook can contain anything a simple web page can: audio, video, styled layouts and, where the reading app allows, small scripts.

The main kinds of enhancement are:

  • Embedded audio. An author introduction, a musical theme, a pronunciation guide, or a sound effect at a key moment.
  • Embedded video. A book trailer, an interview, a demonstration in a non-fiction title, or a short animated scene.
  • Read-along narration. Called Media Overlays in the EPUB standard: recorded narration synchronized with the text, so each phrase is highlighted as it is read. Common in children's books and language learning.
  • Interactive elements. Pop-up notes, quizzes, image galleries or simple widgets. These rely on scripting and have the weakest store support.

An enhanced ebook is still a book. It is opened in a reading app, sold through bookstores and read page by page. That distinguishes it from a book app, which is standalone software in an app store.

Is an enhanced ebook worth it for your book?

It depends on the genre and on what the media adds. Enhancement costs time, often money (narrators, video, design) and some reach, because not every store will sell the result. A useful test: would a reader miss the media if it were removed, or would they simply not notice?

Book typeGood enhancementsVerdict
Children's picture booksRead-along narration, sound effectsStrong fit; families expect it
Non-fiction, how-to, textbooksVideo demonstrations, audio examples, diagramsStrong fit when media teaches something text cannot
Language learningNative-speaker audio, read-alongStrong fit
PoetryAuthor reading each poemGood fit, low cost
Novels, including science fictionAuthor-read prologue, trailer, pronunciation guide, illustrated appendixWorks as bonus material, not inside the narrative

For novelists, the realistic sweet spot is a bonus section at the back of the book: an audio glossary of alien names, a two-minute author video about how the world was built, a gallery of concept art. It rewards fans without interrupting readers who just want the story. If your goal is a full audio edition rather than enhancements, an audiobook is a separate product with its own distribution, and our report on AI-narrated audiobooks and Kindle covers where that market is heading.

Which stores and reading apps support enhanced ebooks?

This is the question that decides most projects. Support changes, so always confirm against each store's current documentation before you build, but the broad picture in late 2026 looks like this:

Store or appEmbedded audioEmbedded videoRead-along (Media Overlays)Scripts (JavaScript)
Apple BooksYesYesYesYes, with limits
Google Play BooksYesYesYesNo
KoboVaries by device and appLimitedLimitedLimited
Amazon KindleNoNoNoNo
Direct sales (EPUB download)Depends on the reader's appDepends on the reader's appDepends on the reader's appDepends on the reader's app

Two practical consequences follow. First, Kindle readers will need a separate, text-only edition, so plan the enhanced version as an addition rather than a replacement. Second, if you want maximum reach for the enhanced edition, design around audio, video and read-along, and avoid scripted interactivity, which only some apps will run. Google's partner help pages state plainly that Play Books does not support interactive functionality enabled by JavaScript.

TipSelling the EPUB from your own website lets you bundle the enhanced and plain editions in one purchase, so every buyer gets a version that works on their device. Our guide to selling books directly from your website covers delivery and payment options.

Reflowable or fixed layout: which should you choose?

EPUB 3 offers two layout models, and the choice affects how your media behaves.

  • Reflowable. Text reflows to fit the screen and the reader can change font size. This suits novels and most non-fiction. Audio and video sit inline, between paragraphs, like images.
  • Fixed layout. Every page is designed like a printed spread, with exact positions for text and images. This suits picture books, comics, cookbooks and heavily designed titles, and it is where read-along narration looks best, because the highlighted text stays exactly where the designer placed it.

A simple rule: if your print edition could be a plain paperback, go reflowable. If it needs a designer for every page, go fixed layout. Fixed layout files are harder to read on small phones, so test on the smallest screen you expect your readers to use.

Which tools can you use to create an enhanced ebook?

You do not need specialist software for a basic enhanced ebook, but the tool you choose decides how much control you get.

Apple PagesFree on Mac, iPhone and iPadAuthors who want a visual editorDrag in audio and video, export EPUB in reflowable or fixed layout

Many authors combine tools: write and format in their usual software, export EPUB, then open the file in Sigil to add or fix the media tags by hand. How should you prepare audio and video files?

Media quality problems are the most common reason enhanced ebooks feel amateur or get rejected. Prepare files before you start building.

  • Audio format. MP3 or AAC (.m4a) are the safest choices. Mono speech at roughly 64 to 96 kbps sounds clean and keeps files small; music may justify a higher bitrate.
  • Video format. MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is the most widely playable combination. 720p is enough for most clips on phones and tablets.
  • Length. Keep clips short: under two minutes for video and a few minutes for audio, unless the clip is the main content. Long media inflates the download for every reader.
  • Poster image. Give every video a poster frame, a still image shown before playback, so the page looks finished even when the video cannot play.
  • Loudness. Normalize all audio to a similar level so readers are not reaching for the volume button between clips.
  • Rights. You need permission for every piece of music, footage and voice you did not create yourself. Narrator and composer contracts should cover ebook use explicitly.

How to create an enhanced ebook in 9 steps

  1. Decide the enhancements and the stores. List each media element and where it goes, and confirm that your target stores support it.
  2. Finish and copyedit the text first. Changing text after narration is recorded means re-recording, and re-syncing read-along files.
  3. Choose reflowable or fixed layout using the rule above.
  4. Produce and encode the media in the formats listed in the previous section, with poster images for video.
  5. Build the EPUB. In Pages or InDesign, insert the media where it belongs and export EPUB 3. In Sigil, add the files and place standard <audio> and <video> tags with controls in the chapter file.
  6. Add fallback text inside each media tag, such as a sentence describing the clip, so readers whose app cannot play it still see something meaningful.
  7. Validate the file with EPUBCheck. The W3C's free validator, EPUBCheck, finds structural errors that stores will otherwise reject on upload. Fix every error and review the warnings.
  8. Test on real devices. Open the file in Apple Books on an iPhone and a Mac, in Google Play Books on an Android phone, and in any other app your readers use. Play every clip.
  9. Publish the enhanced edition and a plain edition. Label the enhanced one clearly in the title or description, such as "Enhanced Edition with audio", so readers know what they are buying.

Expect testing to take longer than building. A clip that plays on a Mac may be silent on a phone, and fixed layout pages often need several rounds of adjustment.

How do you add read-along narration?

Read-along narration uses EPUB Media Overlays: a SMIL file (a small XML file) that lists each text fragment, identified by an id in the HTML, together with the start and end times of the matching audio. The reading app uses it to highlight each phrase while the narration plays.

Writing timings by hand is tedious, so most authors rely on tools. InDesign can produce read-along output for fixed layout books, and free open-source forced-alignment tools such as aeneas and syncabook take a text and a recording and generate the timings automatically. The workflow is the same either way:

  1. Record narration that matches the final text word for word.
  2. Mark the text into fragments (sentences or phrases), each with a unique id.
  3. Generate the SMIL timings with an alignment tool.
  4. Reference the SMIL files and total duration in the EPUB package file, then validate and test.

Read-along support is strongest in Apple Books and Google Play Books. Elsewhere it may play as plain audio or not at all, which is another reason to keep a plain edition available.

How do you keep an enhanced ebook accessible?

Media can lock readers out as easily as it draws them in. A few habits keep an enhanced ebook usable for everyone:

  • Provide a written transcript for every audio clip and a text summary or captions for every video.
  • Never put essential story information only in media. If a clip reveals a plot point, the text should carry it too.
  • Do not autoplay. Let the reader start every clip.
  • Write meaningful alt text for images and poster frames.
  • Make sure controls are reachable with screen readers, which standard HTML5 media controls usually are.

Read-along narration is itself an accessibility feature for many readers, including children and people with dyslexia, so a well-made enhanced edition can widen your audience rather than narrow it.

When should an enhanced ebook become an app?

EPUB 3 is the right container for media added to a book. It is the wrong one when the experience depends on things reading apps do not allow: game mechanics, branching choices with saved progress, push notifications for new episodes, in-app purchases, offline maps that respond to touch, or an AI companion that answers questions about your world.

  • Stay with an enhanced ebook if your features are audio, video, read-along and images, and if bookstore distribution matters to you.
  • Consider an app if you need logic, accounts, payments, analytics or regular updates, and you are ready to treat the project as software, with a budget, app store reviews and maintenance.

Cross-platform frameworks such as Flutter let one codebase run on iPhone, Android and the web, which keeps costs closer to a single build. Our guide on how to turn your book into an app walks through formats, app store rules and costs, and if branching narrative is the draw, see how to write interactive fiction first.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Building for one app only. A file tested only in Apple Books may fail quietly elsewhere. Decide your stores first and test on each.
  • Dropping the plain edition. Kindle readers and readers on basic apps need a version without media.
  • Oversized media. Uncompressed audio and full HD video turn a 2 MB novel into a slow download.
  • Recording before the text is final. Every late edit means re-recording and re-syncing.
  • Relying on scripts. JavaScript features are blocked by some stores and degrade unpredictably in others.
  • Skipping EPUBCheck. Stores validate on upload; finding errors there costs days.
  • Media that interrupts the story. In fiction, put enhancements at chapter ends or in a bonus section.

Questions

Can I sell an enhanced ebook on Amazon Kindle?

Not as an enhanced edition. Standard Kindle ebooks do not play embedded audio or video, so the usual approach is to publish a text-only Kindle version and sell the enhanced EPUB 3 through Apple Books, Google Play Books, Kobo or your own website.

What is the difference between an enhanced ebook and an interactive ebook?

The terms overlap. Enhanced usually means media added to a book: audio clips, video, read-along narration. Interactive usually means the reader does something: quizzes, pop-ups, branching choices or scripted widgets. Scripted interactivity has the weakest store support, so many authors stop at media.

Do I need to know how to code to make an enhanced ebook?

Not for basic media. Apple Pages and Adobe InDesign insert audio and video visually and export EPUB 3. Sigil lets you edit the HTML directly, which helps for fine control, and read-along narration needs a sync file that free tools can generate for you.

How big can an enhanced ebook be?

Large files slow downloads and some stores set upload limits, so check each store's current guidelines before you encode. In practice, compress audio to around 64 to 96 kbps, keep video clips short and use 720p unless detail truly matters.

Is an enhanced ebook worth it for a novel?

Rarely for the main text. Fiction readers mostly want uninterrupted prose. Enhancements work best as bonus material: an author-read prologue, a short trailer, a pronunciation guide for invented names or an illustrated appendix for a science fiction setting.
